Haxby, on the River Foss, is a town in North Yorkshire some 5 miles from the City of York. It is in a glorious part of the county, with the garden village of New Earswick to its south. The name Haxby translates as the farmstead of a leader called Hakr, and the town once held its own races, starting on Tuesday 26th May 1863. The races were organised in conjunction with the village fair and took place on a straight course on Sandy Lane which skirted the farms of Mr Rhodes and Mr Bullock. The viewing facilities were excellent and based in fields owned by Mr Brittain. The card opened with a 6 furlong Sweepstake which was won by Mr Taylor’s Ace of Clubs. The three race card was completed by the Beaten Horses Stakes which was won by Little Pinkie owned by Mr Dixon. Races continued annually for the next 9 years until a final meeting under rules was held on Whit Tuesday 21st May 1872 when the concluding Tally-Ho Stakes was won by Mr Wilson’s Queen Beauty.
